Marriage is an invitation to become one body with your partner – a sacred bond that should never be broken. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh (Matthew 19:5). This shows the birth of something new and blessed by God to last through eternity, for which no one has the authority to separate.
According to Genesis 2:24, the unity of two bodies to become one demonstrates complete sanctity and affinity between two people who are committed to each other for life. This type of commitment is a selfless act that requires mutual love and respect. It is only when both partners are willing to love and cherish each other, just as they love themselves, can they truly unite. A successful union requires each person to step into the mindset of treating their partner just as they would want to be treated. If either partner is unable to empathise with the other, then the relationship will inevitably struggle.
Truly becoming one is a beautiful representation of a lifelong commitment between two people who have dedicated themselves to each other. When you are one body, you are no longer two individual entities; you are united, fused together, and committed to growing and learning together as one, which makes it hard for anyone to try and break. It’s a bond that goes beyond surface-level connections – one that transcends the physical and taps into something much more profound. Without that unity, both parties are just people cohabiting, sharing a space without sharing their hearts.
Shared Principles
God established marriage as a beautiful and sacred institution. Therefore, it’s crucial to find someone who holds the same values and beliefs as you do, according to what Jesus Christ taught. As we are cautioned in 1 John 4:1–3, we should not blindly believe every spirit but instead test them to see if they are from God. This applies to potential partners as well. It is crucial to assess their words, actions, and even the red flags that we may normally overlook. If we truly share the same blueprint of a Christ-like marriage, a strong foundation is established for peaceful union.
Building a successful union requires a shared moral compass that both partners can rely on. It’s about understanding the importance of unconditional love, not just finding someone who makes your heart skip a beat. Taking the time to ensure that you and your partner share the same values lays a solid foundation for the future of your relationship. Jesus never taught us to try to change someone’s beliefs or force them to think like us. Rather, the key to a strong and successful partnership is finding someone who aligns with your values. These shared beliefs are the cornerstone of a successful marriage and give you both something steadfast to build upon.
Submission
To want to be married is to be ready to submit to one another as the head and the helper. Marriage is not a one-way street where one person holds all the power. Rather, it is a partnership of mutual respect and submission. Both parties have different roles to play, with the man serving as the head and the woman as the helper. Each person brings unique strengths to the union, and it is crucial to recognise and appreciate these qualities. Through loving submission to one another, we can build a strong and fulfilling relationship that honours God’s plan for marriage. However, without mutual understanding and respect for each other’s roles, couples run the risk of leading separate lives and undermining the connection that marriage requires. Working as a team and staying within our respective roles not only brings us closer as a couple but also reflects our love and respect for God. This submission operates in households where both partners see Christ as the head of man and the foundation of the home in the first place.
Outward Appearance
Marriage is far more than just physical attraction. There is no doubt that God created men and women to be physically attracted to one another, but he also intended for this bond to be based on the idea of oneness, where a couple becomes so intertwined that they become one. “Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh” describes this connection perfectly. It’s not just about the physical attraction; it’s also about the emotional and spiritual connection that makes a marriage strong. This kind of attraction is what keeps a couple standing in tough times, relying on each other as partners, best friends, and confidants. A strong marriage is built on this kind of love and attraction, where the couple can weather any storm together.
Challenging times
Marriage is a journey filled with happy moments, but it’s also one that comes with its fair share of challenges. These challenges come in different forms, and they can put the strength of the union to the test. That’s why it’s essential for partners to approach their marriage with an understanding that tough times will come and the resolve to face them together. Since the creation of man, it was evident that he required companionship, and Eve was created for that purpose. In the same way, in a marriage, partners are there for each other. By supporting each other and facing challenges together, the beauty of the journey becomes even more poignant.
Sexual Immorality
Marriage provides a framework for us to express our passion in a healthy and fulfilling manner, free from any guilt or shame. It calls us to be faithful and committed to our partners and to honour the sacred bond we have entered into. Jesus reinforced this principle, as we see in Matthew 5:28, where he reminds us that even looking at someone with lustful intent is already committing adultery in our hearts. Furthermore, 1 Corinthians 7:2 emphasises the importance of marriage as a means to avoid the temptation of sexual immorality.
Our bodies are indeed precious gifts from God, designed to house our souls while we walk on this earth. As such, it is important that we treat them with the utmost respect, avoiding any actions that may defile them or go against their natural purpose. 1 Corinthians 6:13 reminds us that our bodies are not meant for sexual immorality but rather for the Lord. By engaging in immoral actions, we not only disrespect ourselves but also disrespect God’s intended purpose for us. Maintaining this mindset will help us make decisions that err on the side of caution and enable us to be fully aware of the consequences of our decisions.
Unwholesome Talk
Marriage requires avoiding harmful language and finding better ways to speak to one another to keep it thriving. Granted, it is not always easy to express ourselves in the right way when upset, and sometimes we end up causing more harm than good. Proverbs 15:4 reminds us that the words we use can either uplift someone’s spirit or break it. Therefore, finding a way to speak kindly and constructively to our spouses is crucial. The tongue is a powerful tool that can cause irreparable damage if used carelessly. As Christians, Ephesians 4:29 reminds us to speak only what is wholesome and helpful to our partners. By using gentle language, we can create a safe space where our spouses feel valued and loved.
Forgive and forget
Forgiveness and forgetting are critical in any marriage, and they are both design principles from God. Forgiveness is about letting go of wrongs committed by our partner and choosing not to hold grudges. The act of forgiving involves acknowledging the hurt that was caused and choosing to release the person from the debt we feel they owe us. Forgetting, on the other hand, is about moving on from past wrongs and not allowing them to influence the present or future. Forgetting means that we will not continually bring up past mistakes, and we will not hold them against our spouse. Together, forgiveness and forgetting create a safe place in a marriage where there is room for vulnerability and authenticity. God designed marriage to be a relationship of grace, non-violence, forgiveness, and unconditional love.
In conclusion, marriage is the cornerstone of a thriving planet, and it’s clear that God intended it to be this way. According to Jesus himself, it is meant to be a union that no one could break. It remains an opportunity to create a home that’s built to last. If it’s approached with care and attention, a marriage can become a source of support, comfort, and companionship for both parties in their youth and old age. Of course, it all depends on the two people in it; can two people work together unless they agree? It’s not always easy, but by following the teachings of Christ, you can build a solid foundation that will stand the test of time.
